Social media giant, Instagram, has just announced that it’s finally allowing videos to be uploaded that are longer than a minute! But does this mean it’s now taking on the likes of YouTube? Only time will tell, but let’s see what the rest of the Trunk team make of the news!
The new platform will sit as a separate app as well as on current newsfeeds, and you’ll be able to upload to this from desktop. This is a lot more convenient, particularly for those of us who run social channels from a computer!
Folks will now be able to upload videos up to 10 minutes in length, with some influencers being granted hour-long videos. We’re not sure what we’re going to be watching that is that long, but the ultimate goal is apparently for people to have no time restraints on their uploads.
Instagram will continue to show videos in portrait mode claiming this is the “natural way” people use their phones. This provides a creative challenge for content teams, such as us, who have to design videos that look good both vertically and horizontally.
The Trunk film team are excited about this new change saying: “a new platform with new ratios is always welcomed, as it not only provides a creative challenge, but a better experience for the user, so it’s win-win. It does raise the question though of how long it’ll be until they’re making video cameras that are designed to natively film vertically, so we’re sure that’ll be on the horizon next.”
How much of a difference this new change will make is yet to be seen as it was only announced yesterday, but we doubt YouTube are shaking in their boots just yet. So, check out the longer videos on Instagram, lose even more time watching random videos on social and let us know what you make of it!
